MinFree™ for Biomass Pre-treatment – An Important Component of the Bio–TCat Process

  • Anellotech’s MinFree technology, a proprietary biomass pre-treatment process and key enabler for the Bio-TCat biomass conversion technology, significantly reduces mineral (ash) content of wood and other non-food biomass sources.
  • Anellotech has fully developed MinFree for removing naturally-occurring minerals (including calcium and potassium) from wood biomass, including trials at its multi-tonne scale continuous MinFree pilot plant.
  • Sustained trials using MinFree-treated loblolly pine at Anellotech’s TCat-8® Demo plant confirm the effectiveness of the MinFree’s process in dramatically extending catalyst life, making Anellotech’s Bio-TCat conversion technology increasingly efficient and competitive.
MinFree™ for Biomass Pretreatment
Anellotech’s lab-scale systems, pilot and demo plants can be available for development work on other woods and agricultural residue biomass feedstocks for conversion into chemicals and fuels using the MinFree and Bio-TCat processes.

While agricultural residues such as corn stover and sugar cane bagasse have higher mineral content than wood, they could be available in very large volumes allowing for very large scale Bio-TCat plants. Anellotech is interested in collaborating with strategic and funding partners to enable MinFree development for feeding these materials into large Bio-TCat plants.

MinFree can benefit other forest industry applications by reducing the mineral content of low-cost biomass feedstocks. For example, an efficient, mineral-reduced feedstock can improve the efficiency, on-stream time and equipment life for pellet wood-fed biomass to energy plants.
